In Case You Missed It: Mayor Kasim Reed Unveils TravelSafely™ App Recap

On December 20, 2017, Renew Atlanta/TSPLOST General Manager Faye DiMassimo, GDOT’s Chief Engineer Meg Pirkle, Batallion 3 Chief Dwayne Johnson joined Mayor Kasim Reed in unveiling the TravelSafely™ smartphone application. Members of the application developer, Applied Information Inc., were also in attendance.

The TravelSafely app is the newest tool that will be used along the North Avenue Smart Corridor, the 2.3 mile stretch of North Avenue from Ponce City Market to Georgia Tech. The City of Atlanta will connect traffic signals, emergency vehicles and school zone safety flashers using smart city technology developed by Applied Information Inc.

“We cut the ribbon just in September. We knew it was going to be special. Today we are taking that huge next step on the North Avenue Smart Corridor with the TravelSafely app,” said Mayor Reed.

The app uses smart technology to alert users of potentially dangerous road conditions, traffic light changes, emergency vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists and runners approaching, and when users are speeding toward a curve or school zone. Audible alerts and spoken warnings notify motorists to pedestrians and cyclists within range so users do not need their phones in hand while the app is working in the background. For additional information about the app and to participate in the “living lab”, visit
