This week is Earth Week. And while it’s no Shark Week, the City of Atlanta is planning some big events to make the week special.
To kick things off this evening, the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability is hosting an event to highlight the city’s urban agricultural programs. The Westside Cultural Arts Center will play host to “Taste of AGlanta,” featuring an array of Westside farm-to-table chefs including folks from the kitchens of The Optimist, 5 Seasons, Bocado, Miller Union, JCT Kitchen, and Souper Jenny.
First Lady of Atlanta Sarah-Elizabeth Reed and Laura Turner Seydel are co-hosting the event, with proceeds from tickets going to benefit urban agriculture in the city. What better way to celebrate Earth Week than with some delicious food, all while supporting community and school education gardens on the Westside? Things kick off at 6:30 with a VIP cocktail reception, with the main event opening up at 7 p.m.; tickets should be purchased in advance.
For those who want to continue celebrating Earth Week — and helping the city out — there will be a community service project on Friday to support the edible gardens at Covenant House.
According to a press release from the city, volunteers will help construct a new greenhouse to support homeless youth residents at Covenant House. Other activities will include building raised bed gardens, harvesting spring gardens, gardening lessons from resident urban farmer Cullen Brown, and working with culinary writer and chef, Nealey Dozier Thompson, to prepare a farm-to-fork culinary lunch experience for the first 50 volunteers.
